Sisters Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine are the only siblings to have won lead Academy Awards, and quite unfortunately, had one of the biggest sibling rivalries that Old Hollywood has ever seen. It started even in their childhood, when Olivia would rip up the clothes that she would hand down to Joan, forcing the younger sister to sew them back together.
Of the two, Olivia was the first to become an actress. She was their mother’s favorite child, so when Joan tried to fo...llow her lead, their mother refused to let her use the de Havilland family name professionally.
In 1942, both sisters were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. Joan beat Olivia, and as she stepped forward to receive her award, she ignored her older sister’s attempts to congratulate her. Olivia had her revenge when she won her award several years later, walking past Joan and ignoring the hand she had extended in congratulations.
The sisters never resolved their issues. When their mother died, Joan claimed that Olivia did not make any efforts to notify her. She had been touring with a play at that time, and received the news by telegram, which came two weeks after their mother’s death.
Joan died in December of 2013. “I married first, won the Oscar before Olivia did, and if I die first, she’ll undoubtedly be livid because I beat her to it.”
I don't suppose there are very many of you reading this even know who these actresses are but I thought this was very interesting since they were of my youth.
