In 1886, he moved to Chicago and took over a pharmacy in South Side Englewood. Then he built a three-story “Murder Castle” hotel, which housed many bizzare features – doors that led to nothing, rooms without windows, trapdoors and hidden passageways, and he lured numerous victims in during the 1893 Chicago World's Columbian Exposition.
Once admitting to killing 27 people estimates range from 20 to 100 victims, with some reports going as high as 200 victims. He was captured and hanged in 1896 in Philadelphia.
